Among its founding-factors to the Spanish colonizers was to possess a fortified town next to the area of Zaruma, which was in that time rich in gold. It was at the same time a departure stage for the Amazon Basin to look for the mystic city of El Dorado. The town was also visited by Simón Bolívar in his marketing campaign to unite Gran Colombia.
